The Mission Viejo Company purchased the last 6,600 acres for a new planned community in 1976, that is now a big part of Aliso Viejo. The homes were first offered in March 1982 and the very home owners arrived early November in the same year.
On July 1, 2001 Aliso Viejo became Orange County 's 34th city. The first completely planned community in Orange County, the home developments were targeted to middle and upper-middle income homebuyers. Aliso Viejo had less than eight thousand residents in 1990. Companies were building the homes, condos and apartments so fast there were waiting lists and lotteries for singles and couples that wanted to be a part of the community. By the year 2000, Aliso Viejo's population expanded by thirty-two thousand residents, making it the number one city in regards to population growth in Orange County.
Aliso Viejo was designed to make it a possibility to live, work and play all in the same community, today Aliso Viejo continues to grow and prosper.

Aliso Viejo Historic Information
After Mexico had gained it's independence from Spain in the early 1800's, many of the loyalists were given large land grants in California. On of them was the thirteen thousand acre Rancho Niguel. which was given to Don Juan Avila. The very location where Laguna Hills would later be. In 1874 the land was sold to a Mr. Lewis Moulton, who was a land and home developer. With this real estate purchase the sprawling ranch was increased to twenty two thousand acres. The primary use of the ranch was raising sheep and cattle. Around 1960, the Moulton Ranch property was divided up. One portion of the land became known as Laguna Hills.
